Am I Too Fat?
Yesterday I received an email submitted through my blog. It was submitted anonymously and simply stated: “arnt you too fat to write a fashion blog?” You asked, and now I will answer.
Dear anonymous,
Simply stated, the answer is “no,” I’m not too fat to write a fashion blog. Beauty comes in all shapes, sizes and colors.
Sure, the majority of fashion bloggers you see are probably skinny minnies, but why are they the only ones allowed to blog? The average size of the American woman is a 14, therefore these “skinny bloggers” are aimed at only a small percentage of the population and most women don’t actually fit those size restrictions. Too often the full-figured woman is neglected in terms of fashion advice. According to the NY Times, “Government statistics show that 64 percent of American women are overweight … More than one-third are obese.”
Full-figured women are a much greater percentage of the population than are traditionally recognized in the fashion blogger community. Based on that it’s actually important for people who don’t fit the skinny “model” mold to offer fashion advice – it’s a vastly under-served population. I bring something new and different to the table. I’m proud of my curves and the fact that I can dress appropriately for them. For all of the other full-figured women out there who aren’t sure how to dress for their body or are self-conscious for any reason (not just body shape!) I’m writing for you. I want each and every one of you to feel fantastic in your own skin, to feel beautiful and loved. I want you to be proud of who you are and where you’re going.
What really amazed me about receiving this email was how this came out of nowhere, straight out of left field. It was completely unexpected. Reading those 9 little words hit me like a semi truck. Quickly I was transported back to grade school, jr. high, high school, and even college remembering every time anyone ever hurt me with a snide remark about my size. It’s taken me years to come to terms with the fact that this is me and be okay with it and in the course of 5 seconds I was brought so far down, it seemed as if all of my hard work on accepting who I am had been erased.
Luckily after a few pity tears, a bite or two of pizza (being “fat” means I don’t count those calories), I was ready to face my demons and realize that this comment was not the end of the world. I LOVE that I’m not a size 2, I LOVE my curves, and I LOVE that this sets me apart from the crowd. This is who I am and if you think I’m too fat for a fashion blog then great! But please don’t stop by my page again.
Update:
A Heartfelt Thank You – A thank you to my readers for their endless support!
I’d Rather be Called Fat – My response to a reader comment on this post, accusing me of leading an unhealthy lifestyle & considering me obese.
That person that wrote you that comment anonymously is obviously, one, a coward and two, someone that is pretty shallow and narrow minded. I have a few other words I could share, but that kind of defeats the purpose of rising above. I like your style, Kate, and I think your blog is awesome. Don’t let the mean, insecure people ever bring you down!
Dear Anonymous, Aren’t you too dumb to spell ‘aren’t’ correctly? Oh, yeah, you are. Both your spelling and your rude comments only serve to show what a dumbass you are.
Kate, your blog is amazing and you are hands-down the most stylish person I know. I love that you’re a voice to the majority of women in this country, the ones who AREN’T (yes, I can spell!) a Size 2.
Kate, you go girl! Your doing an awesome job on your blog. Really sad when people are not happy in their own lives and have to try and take others down. You are a strong, beautiful woman! Keep doing what you do!
You are beautiful, Kait, don’t ever forget it! Like I said, who the hell gives anonymous the right to say what they did. I love how spirited this blog is and it makes me miss seeing the spirit and fight in you all the time while at college. I am glad that you are able to own and celebrate your curves! And I’m really sorry that those snide words do ever leave anyone’s lips. How dare us, all of us, be so cruel. We are better than this, why don’t we show it?!
Anyway, Kait, I love you! And I’m excited to see you when I return home in just over a month!!
Kate, You are beautiful!!!! Dont let Anonymous get the best of you, they are the COWARD especially for sending it ANONYMOUS!!! Plus Size is beautiful!!
Thank you for your support Christine!
Awesome response. You have a new fan (me!).
Thank you Kim! Always glad to have new fans! 🙂
You’re a perfect example for the rest of us not very skinny, American Women who enjoy wearing attractive, stylish clothes, for any occasion. Too fat? Nah…it’s our dollars that shape the fashion trends. I love your take on things! You’re wonderful!
Thank you so much Stacey!
You are beautiful. Love it and am going to start following you now!
Thank you so much! Hope you enjoy my blog!
Anonymous is a JERK! You go girl! I love your fashion you are very classy 🙂
Thank you so much for your kind words 🙂
I am very proud of you, Kate, for writing this. It’s a bold piece, but knowing you, that’s exactly how it should be. Plus it’s very well written.
I’ve never thought about the average size of women and how much we need people who reflect our shapes to tell the stories of fashion until I read this earlier today. Sure, I always look at catalogs and magazines and wonder if my hips will agree with that dress that I’ve fallen in love with. And most of the times the answer is no.
So thank you — for writing this and for representing the majority of us.
Thank you so much for your kind words and continual support Laura! Love you!
bravo, my dear! don’t let the haters get you down. 🙂
As a plus size woman, I applaud you. Keep writing for us, Kate.
Thank you for your support!

People are so mean but cowardly and would never say something that atrocious with their name attached. I’m so proud of your response, I think you are absolutely gorgeous and a true inspiration to women!

Alex – Thanks so much for your kind words! Love your blog!!
Dear Kate, this article is amazing and you’re beautiful! But, I don’t think you should have given that awful comment a second thought, let alone dedicate a whole post to it! You’re better and stronger than that! Enjoy what you do and nothing and no one else matters! Kisses from http://www.moiminnie.blogspot.com xx
Obviously ‘Anonymous’ needs to get clued up on how plus size fashion is slowly but surely kicking up a storm in the fashion world. One of its championers, is a plus-size fashion blogger who is one of my favourite bloggers- http://www.gabifresh.com/ She was even recently featured in the New York Times, along with other successful plus size bloggers. I love the way she puts it fabulously out there showing that just coz you aren’t model size does not mean you don’t have the right to love style and dress with pizzazz! Keep on going Missy!
I think you have a great perspective Kate, but don’t forget by posting images like the one you added to this post that you’re being disparaging towards people without curves in much the same way Anonymous was disparaging towards your weight.
Elissa – Thank you for your note. Anonymous made a disparaging comment towards me personally. My response made no disparaging remarks towards any body type. I apologize if you took the image to slight the less curvaceous as that was not my intention.
Elissa, I think you’re off-base with your comment. I’m a Size 4 and although I probably fall into your category of “people without curves”, I found nothing disparaging whatsoever in this post. Kate was advocating for curvy women who don’t fit into sample sizes and yet are beautiful and fashionable. I do not find a picture of a pretty woman embracing her curves to be disparaging at all; in fact, I see it as projecting a positive image of self-love and unapologetic confidence and sexiness. The picture shows a woman loving herself as-is. It doesn’t say “thin girls are ugly” or “if you don’t have curves you are not sexy and men will not like you”. If you look at that image and see either of those remarks or any other disparaging message, that might be on you and not on the image itself.
Perhaps disparaging was the wrong word, but the image does imply that there is something wrong with a woman without curves. Women come in all shapes and we should celebrate all types which I’m sure we all agree on.
I think you read far too much into the image and distorted its meaning. The image supported the theme of the blog, which was that curvy women should not feel alienated in a society that pushes us to be pin-thin. I definitely agree with you that ‘disparaging’ was the wrong word to describe the image. When I saw it, ‘uplifting’ was more the word I came up with. And again, I am not the demographic that the image or the post was written for, so if I’m not offended by it, I have a hard time understanding why anyone else would be. But no matter how good a blog post, article, whatever, there’s always that one person who has to comment and be offended or disagree with something.
I’m not offended and I don’t even disagree. My point was that we shouldn’t put down or minimize one demographic to uplift another. Celebration should be mutual, all inclusive, and everyone should feel good, confident and accepted. It’s not just about celebrating curves, but about celebrating our bodies and the differences in each.
That’s exactly the point Kate was making. Let’s not get hung up on the image and focus on the message of the blog. Way to go Kate for speaking for all women!
Elissa, I absolutely agree. As I stated in my post, I want each and every one of you to feel fantastic in your own skin, to feel beautiful and loved. I want you to be proud of who you are and where you’re going.
Now you’re just restating what Kate said originally in her post. So I’m not really sure what you’re trying to say, maybe you’re just here to stir up controversy when there is none. There’s always going to be some content that will offend someone if he or she wishes to be offended. I think everyone else who has read this post agrees that it was a home run and we appreciate that Kate was brave enough to put herself out there and write it.
Kate, I love your answer and thank you for writing it. I was told the exact same things by a number of people when I decided to start my own fashion blog. Hell, I did not get a job with a famous fashion magazine because I ‘did not fit the image’ aka too fat for their liking. I still get ‘the look’ at some fashion events, but unlike those losers I dont have a size zero brain!!!! I am proud of me!!!
Keep up the great work!!!

I appreciate you so much for posting this. I had a problem with my age when I was a teenager. I never believed that my body was perfect and as a dancer everything seemed to be about competition. Who was the most flexible, who had the highest jumps, who fit into their costume better…. I blame my dance teacher for never making me feel good enough and hosting an environment where vulnerable teenage girls didn’t feel comfortable about themselves. I look back at photos and think DAMN I looked good. Why couldn’t I have thought so then?
No matter what size, shape or color of your skin – everyone should think they are beautiful. Shame on those who put down others and make them believe they are not good enough
Lindsey – You’re beautiful and I love you so much! I was a dancer as well for over 18 years! I completely understand the competitiveness and I was always the “bigger girl,” and you’re right it’s not a healthy environment. My ballet teacher actually named my stomach so she could tell me to suck it in. How terrible is that?
So glad you enjoyed my blog post and remember you are beautiful!
That person’s comment may have been hurtful, and obviously pointless as anyone can blog, however I feel the need to point out to you and your supporters that obesity is not something that we should congratulate or casually overlook. You are, as you say, “full-figured,” and “curvy,” but your weight is in fact unhealthy. I applaud your resilience in the face of cruelty, but I also encourage you and your overweight readers to seek a healthier lifestyle to accompany your love for fashion. Love yourself by loving and respecting your body.
Carlie, I find your need to point out that full figured people are unhealthy obnoxious and self-righteous. I don’t think anyone that is “full-figured” isn’t aware of a need to shed some weight. We always have people like you to point it out regularly and often. I don’t recall Kate saying in her blog that she was home sitting there eating bon bons and living her life in an unhealthy way. Kate is a Zumba fanatic and takes care to eat sensibly most of the time. While she may have mentioned having a piece of pizza in a moment of sadness, I don’t recall her advocating that we all pack it on and be unhealthy and live it up. Thank you for taking your time to make sure everyone that is “full-figured” knows they are unhealthy in your opinion. Thank you for being part of the problem for people feeling bad about who they are. It is much easier to find motivation when you feel good about who you are than it is when everyone is pointing out what is wrong with you. I would also like to say that there are plenty of thin people that eat horribly and don’t take care of themselves at all. Please, visit all of those individuals blogs immediately and alert them to their need to take action. End with telling them to love and respect their body, too. That part is important.
Carlie, WOW, weight is only one aspect of one’s health. There are a lot of active and fit people who are overweight. I know many overweight people who are in better shape, eat healthier and take better care of their bodies than many thin people. I’m certain that Kate and many like minded individuals do not endorse unhealthy lifestyles and many work on eating healthy, exercise regularly for life. In the meantime, heck ya let’s have a little fun with fashion, family, friends, exercise (I highly recommend Zumba where you can burn 500 to 1,000 calories per class) and yes once in a while indulge in something yummy. Maybe you would have to live a lifetime in their shoes to understand.
See: I would have been less classy and whipped off a snarky, “Last time I checked, my stomach wasn’t the size of an ocean and my arms weren’t proportioned like a T. rex, so NO, I am not too fat to be a fashion blogger. I can still reach the keys. But, I do appreciate your concern for the health of my curves.”
Good for you for writing this! It is eloquent, honest and the perfect response. I don’t know if I would have handled a hate-comment as well as you (although I would have been right there with you on the pizza and tears). People can be so mean, I just don’t get it.
You are beautiful on the inside and out, which is clearly something anonymous does not having going for her.
I love that the person was too big of a coward to even sign their name. I too have had just about all I can take of people being size-ist in this country. It is outrageous that more people don’t speak up! Good for you for being a positive example of a beautiful woman with style!
Thank you for your support!
Kate, your beautiful. I love you and I approve your message! Thank you for saying what so many girls don’t know how… and Pizza you will work that off in the FRONT ROW at ZUMBA!
I think I worked it off last week during Kass Martin if I hadn’t already!!!
Kate- So glad to have met you and to see what a strong, confident lady you are. If this person passed by you on the street, I can bet they would never think twice about a comment like that because of your CONFIDENCE. You have a keen fashion sense and an amazing whit that I noticed from the very first time I met you! Hope to see you soon!
Thank you! 🙂

I’m actually not a great resource on low fat dessert recipes. I don’t really cook a lot! I’m quite bad at it. I tend to go for the 100 calorie packs of sweets or find a delicious alternative. I’m really into Dannon Oikos Greek Yogurt with fruit on the bottom. Peach is my favorite!

You are beautiful and so courageous! The ignorance and hatred of others outrages me! As a new blogger, I am so inspired by the grace you continually exhibit despite the cruelty of some other’s actions. As a full-figured girl myself, I hate when some people jump to conclusions regarding my size or decisions. I just want to thank you for posting about something that was likely a painful experience. Without realizing it, you have become such an encouragement and inspiration to me. Thank you!

Kate
Wow, found this article through ifb, and now have tears in my eyes. You are truly an inspiration to me. Before I started my blog I questioned myself thinking I wasn’t skinny, rich, stylish, interesting etc enough to write a blog but in fact its the best thing I’ve ever done. To me blogging is a chance for anyone and everyone to talk about the world, so bullies and trolls be warned, us bloggers are stronger than you think. So glad you stood up to this person.

In your words, fashion has nothing to do with size, and everything to do with attitude. Good and insightful read

I’m glad I read your full post on this before responding. Your words are encouraging and well thought out. . I would only suggest in regards to your postcard that if your message is for promoting healthy body images then it’s important that you don’t insult other body types. Thank you for your time
. I am glad that you are able to own and celebrate your curves! And I’m really sorry that those snide words do ever leave anyone’s lips.
